Faxing is pretty outdated, but some places still require faxing documents. There are many online faxing services, but most of them require a monthly signup. I found a good article on cheap pay as you go faxing services. Here are the steps I ended up with, and it only cost $0.98.
1. Simply scan in your document as a pdf. (If you need to merge multiple pdfs into one for faxing, then try pdfsam).
2. Go to gotfreefax, and fill out the info.
A little more info. The people at gotfreefax also have a free option, but for some strange reason I felt compelled to pay for my fax. I guess I feel like if something goes wrong, then I have a right to complain.
